Plug-in solar: a guide for your home

Plug-in solar panels offer a small-scale way to generate electricity at home. Before choosing a kit, consider where it can sit, how it will connect and whether you use electricity during daylight hours.

How does it work?

The panels turn daylight into DC electricity. A microinverter converts this to AC electricity for household use. A qualifying plug-in device connects through a suitable mains socket. Home solar can reduce the electricity you buy while it is generating, but it will not normally cover all your household demand.

What does 800W mean?

For 800W solar systems, the figure describes the maximum AC output, not a guaranteed continuous supply. Panel ratings and inverter output are different specifications. Check both when comparing kits, along with the full device model and installation instructions.

Power is measured in watts; energy over time is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). As a calculation example, a system delivering 0.8kW for one hour produces 0.8kWh. It will not deliver that output every hour: daylight, season, panel angle, shade and weather all affect generation. A useful annual estimate needs the proposed site and equipment details.

Is plug-in solar legal in Great Britain?

Qualifying devices became legal to buy and use in England, Scotland and Wales on 27 August 2026. This does not make every imported kit or inverter suitable for a UK socket. The government announcement explains the change. Northern Ireland has a different regulatory position.

Before buying, confirm the exact device against the current UK requirements and relevant register. Follow its instructions and complete the required registration. Do not assume that familiar panel branding proves the complete kit is compliant.

Balcony solar, gardens and other locations

“Balcony solar” is another common name for small solar kits, but it does not mean every balcony is suitable. A garden or accessible low-level position may be more practical. Consider a secure mounting surface, access, shading and a safe cable route. Elevated positions, shared buildings and uncertain structures need closer assessment.

Can I fit it myself?

Some qualifying devices are intended for self-installation when the home and mounting arrangement meet the instructions. That does not cover alterations to fixed wiring or work you cannot safely carry out. If you are unsure about the electrics or fixings, get an assessment first.

What should I compare before spending money?

Do not compare offers using a single promised saving. Generation, self-consumption and electricity tariffs vary. Electricity generated while nobody needs it may have a different value from electricity used immediately.
